Maya Angelou has written her own biographies throughout her career. Every source online will tell you that Maya was a poet, dancer, singer, activist, and scholar. She experienced her parent’s divorce at a young age and was torn between households. Her story took a darker turn when her mother’s boyfriend raped her at age seven. The perpetrator was jailed and then killed. Young Maya thought she was the root cause of this event and became mute for six years.
