Iya Foods is a women-owned business that specializes in authentic seasonings and powers for food. The inspiration came from a story from Nigeria. Being raised there, Toyin longed for a healthy food connection between modern food and African food. Each product has Nigerian ingredients that remind others of their culture.
The history of Ivy Foods begin with Toyin Kolawole who ran a variety of businesses like selling fast food and even salt water. She then pursued accounting and management degrees in college, which lead to her corporate job at an equity firm that reviews a multitude of business plans.
“One of the things that stood out for me as an immigrant moving to the United States, I will tell you, is food,” she said. “The U.S. is one place where you can really get virtually every culture in the world. That’s one of the things I discovered about myself because growing up in Nigeria, I ate Nigerian food. But coming to the U.S., I realized just how much I loved Mexican food or how much I love sushi, things I had never tasted before. It awoke this passion for foods from different regions of the world.”
Ivy Foods – An African Black Women Owned Food Busness
One thing that Kolawole felt was missing from her local region was African food. Thus, in 2015, she founded Iya Foods in Illinois. Her business was to include many Nigerian ingredients to her own food that’ll make it taste delicious. Some of these ingredients come in seasonings like the African Pepper Soup Seasoning.
As Ivy Foods introduced more African-inspired flavors into the market, they ended up partnering with Terra Ingredients. The two seasoning makers launched a rice flour alternative called fonio flour. This is said to hit the market shortly in the USA.
